On August 8, 2023, President Biden declared Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument, which protects nearly 1 million acres of tribes' ancestral homelands on the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon.

CARLETTA TILOUSI: The Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition consists of tribal leaders in the Southwest that consider the Grand Canyon sacred. And we are all working together to protect the water that's underneath us and also the animals and the natural resources here in this area.
STUART CHAVEZ: We're placed here to protect the region, to protect the land, to protect the medicinal plants, even the animals that live within this region.
CARLETTA TILOUSI: So the national monument, once it's declared, it'll be a very historic moment for all the tribes that live in this region.
