Arizona is, to people around the world, the Grand Canyon State. But, there’s an ongoing debate about allowing uranium mining around the natural wonder.
Just before the holidays, Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema introduced a bill that would ban new uranium mining around Grand Canyon National Park. It echoes similar legislation introduced by Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva that passed the House of Representatives last year.
Currently, there’s a temporary ban on uranium mining in the area. Sinema’s bill would make that permanent on about 1 million acres of land.
