The joke in south-central Utah is that Boulder Mountain has many lakes, and the Thousand Lake Mountain is covered in boulders. If you’re looking for a “rocking” good time, consider staying at Elkhorn Campground, located on Thousand Lake Mountain in a thick stand of aspen, pine, and spruce trees.
There are several trails in the area, including Thousand Lake Mountain Trail that takes you to the summit of the flat-topped mountain, and the Great Western Trail, which meanders through Fishlake National Forest. Elkhorn Ranger Station is across the meadow from the campground.
In addition to the six first come, first serve single campsites, the campground has a group site that can accommodate up to 75 people. This site can be reserved up to 12 months in advance.
Take UT 72 north from Loa, which joins UT 24 at the western edge of town. Drive north on UT 72 for 11.4 miles (going through Fremont) to Forest Road 206. Turn right on the dirt road and stay on FR 206 for about 7.5 miles until you reach Elkhorn Campground on your right.
