Grand Canyon Trust Statement on Interior Secretary Deb Haaland’s Confirmation

FLAGSTAFF, AZ — We’re incredibly grateful to have Deb Haaland as our new interior secretary. She brings a unique set of skills and experiences to the position including a deep knowledge of land issues and tribal sovereignty, demonstrated success working with all sides to advance conservation in Congress, political chops as a party leader in New Mexico, and the know-how to navigate challenging dynamics as a tribal administrator. Having an Indigenous woman at the helm of the U.S. Department of the Interior is long overdue, but the fact that it’s Deb Haaland means we’re that much more fortunate. We look forward to working with her to reinstate science, advance land and water conservation, and elevate the voices of Indigenous leaders at interior.
