An environmental group on Thursday challenged a report by the National Park Service that classifies bison at the Grand Canyon as a native species, saying the agency is ignoring scientific facts.
Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility said the agency’s position was a surprise because it was a reversal from its longstanding stance that bison are not indigenous to the area.
There is no scientific evidence that bison historically were part of the Grand Canyon, the organization said in a statement. The group also criticized trying to control the bison population through lethal means instead of removing them from the park.
