Horsethief Campground

Description

Horsethief Campground is one of Moab’s largest. With 90 sites, the campground can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs during the busiest of seasons. Sites are arranged in three loops (Appaloosa, Buckskin, and Cayuse), and you have plenty of piñon pines, juniper trees, and blackbrush separating you and your neighbors.

The campground is conveniently located off UT 313 and is a great basecamp for people exploring Dead Horse Point State Park or the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park. If you’re preparing for a day of hiking or biking, consider warming up on the Horsethief Campground hiking trail. This short walk is less than a mile, starts from the west end of the Appaloosa Loop, and features views of the Henry Mountains to the southwest.

Note: Horsethief Campground has no water. You can fill your water jugs at Lions Park (intersection of Hwy 191 and UT 128) near the pedestrian bridge dedication plaque, or at Gearheads Outdoor Store in downtown Moab.

Directions

From the visitor center in Moab, Utah, drive 11 miles north on Hwy 191. Turn left onto UT 313, and continue for another 12 miles towards Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park. The campground is on the right side of the road, marked by a BLM sign. Follow the gravel spur road a short ways to the campground entrance.
