The Trust is actively participating in a two-year collaboration (April 2007-April 2009), on two cattle allotments (Ten Mile and Pine Creek/Sulphurbeds) that are experiencing numerous natural resource problems. The Tushar Allotments Collaboration originated in 2007 when the Trust and Three Forests Coalition proposed the collaboration in place of litigating a Forest decision regarding eight cattle term grazing permits on the Fishlake National Forest.
In the Collaboration, co-sponsored by Utah Farm Bureau and Grand Canyon Trust, 21 participants (including permittees, conservation groups, Fishlake National Forest, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, a County Commissioner, and the Farm Bureau) are jointly examining the two allotments and will propose solutions to problems they observe. Among the natural resources to receive group attention are restoration of habitat for beaver in Pine Creek and aspen community health. The presence of many species is linked to the condition of these species.
As the natural resource stresses observed in these two allotments are common in many other southern Utah livestock allotments, the good information, relationships, and solutions generated by this process will be helpful beyond the artificial confines of these two allotments.
During summer 2008, intensive monitoring of the two allotments will be undertaken by all Collaboration participants.
