In November 2003, Grand Canyon Trust led a ground-breaking, three-day meeting in Park City, Utah to form and provide major leadership for the 14-organization Three Forests Coalition to bring conservation and restoration to southern Utah’s three Colorado Plateau national forests, the Dixie, Fishlake, and Manti-La Sal.
By engaging the diverse and collective strengths and skills of these 14 organizations, we’ve brought more than a dozen comprehensive alternatives to the three national forests for their forest-wide and project-specific decisionmaking. We will bring more proposals in 2008. The result has been continuous and positive engagement with the three Forests' managers; rewarding connections with communities, landowners, and permittees; collaborative projects with the Forest Service and diverse stakeholders; and impressive field work through which we are showing where management can and must change.
Four major 2008 Grand Canyon Trust projects are being undertaken as part of our engagement with these three Colorado Plateau national forests:
- Reference Areas Project: Locating "gold standard" habitats on the three forests and using them as goals to strive toward.
