Grand Canyon Trust has made great progress on renewable energy projects on Navajo and Hopi lands.

We have…

  • Helped the Navajo Nation prepare for ownership of the Aubrey Cliffs wind-energy project at Big Boquillas Ranch by educating leaders on ownership models and economic opportunities, by establishing an asset-management company to deal with sovereign immunity, and by providing a mechanism through which the Navajo Nation can invest.
  • Facilitated the Shonto Chapter’s launch of a renewable energy business, Shaa’tohi’ (Shonto) Energy Solutions, with management, financing, and component provider agreements.
  • Created the Arizona Sustainable Growth Fund, a funding source derived from a lawsuit settlement with Tucson Electric Power, to be used for clean-energy projects. The fund provides a match for 75 percent of the cost of individual solar systems being installed on many Hopi and Navajo family homes and community schools.
  • Guided the Hopi tribe and Foresight Wind Energy through predevelopment work and helped secure a conditional use permit for the 60 MW Sunshine Wind Farm project.
