The Trust began developing its Geographic Information System (GIS) program in 1998. At a time when most nonprofits of similar size relied on outside contractors, we took the plunge and chose to embed GIS as a support program. Since then, the program has matured, expanded, and become a mission-critical service.

Roughly 60 percent of what we do with GIS is custom mapping. The remaining support functions support navigation, spatial analysis, data capture, agency communication, and other “geospatial” needs. It sounds high-tech, but it all boils down to using all the tools in the Swiss army knife to protect the stunning landscapes, wildlife, and plants of the Colorado Plateau.
